中央外國語大學是印度第一任總理Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru創(chuàng)建的。曾用名CIE。1958年成立于海得拉巴，是一所專門培訓教師的英語學院。1972年4月，學院拓寬了教學范圍，增加了其他外國語言的教學。并且更名為中央英語與外國語學院。1973年7月，大學正式更名后，由于其出色的教學水準，被印度UGC評為值得信任的大學。目前大學擁有三個校區(qū)，主校區(qū)位于海得拉巴。英語與外國語大學為印度唯一的專業(yè)的外國語教學機構，相當于中國的北京外國語大學。
